14 Great Ways to Celebrate the Holidays in Riverside, CA!

Bright, twinkling lights are beginning to appear throughout neighborhoods in Riverside, offering a not-so-subtle reminder that the holiday season is upon us once again.

One of the benefits of celebrating the holidays in Riverside is the temperate California winter. The mild SoCal weather means there are bountiful opportunities to participate in activities both outdoors and indoors without having to venture out all bundled up in suffocating winter suits—like little Ralphie in A Christmas Story.

No matter how you choose to mark the holiday season, there are a multitude of activities, performances, shopping opportunities, and more to make Riverside the place to be this time of year. Here are just 15 suggestions of things to do regional to Riverside:

Performances

Christmas Concert at the Oaks Gospel & Contemporary Christian Music: This festive Christmas concert is sure to sweep you away in the spirit of the season. Not only can attendees enjoy beautiful singing from the SWRC Community Choir and Oak Grove Youth, but tickets also include a Southern-style dinner. The concert is on Saturday, December 9, at 5:30 p.m., so get tickets soon before they sell out.

Disney On Ice Presents Frozen and Encanto: The annual Disney On Ice extravaganza glides into the Toyota Arena for nine shows in four days, December 21–24. There are even two shows on Christmas Eve for those fond of springing a big surprise on family members (not to mention significant others). This year’s program will feature family-favorite appearances by the likes of Frozen’s Elsa and Encanto’s Mirabel. If you attend, be sure to bring a credit card, as the venue is cashless.

A Charlie Brown Christmas: The beloved Charlie Brown Christmas special has been charming viewers of all ages for decades. Now, you and your family have the chance to watch a live performance of the Peanuts gang on November 18. Join the crew as they discover the true meaning of Christmas—it will be a show both children and the young at heart can enjoy!

Trans-Siberian Orchestra’s “The Ghosts of Christmas Eve: The Best of TSO and More”: If you have never experienced the full-sensory assault of a Trans-Siberian concert, then we can only ask, “What are you waiting for?” These shows—which, by the way, are suitable for the entire family—feature lasers, pyrotechnics, bombastic classical music performed as a rock spectacle, and tender narration and storytelling. There will be two shows on December 2 at Toyota Arena: one at 3:00 p.m. and another at 7:30 p.m.

Mariachi Sol de Mexico: What’s better than enjoying Christmas music? Attending a live mariachi performance! On December 1 at 7:00 p.m., you and your family can listen to Christmas hits from Mariachi Sol de Mexico, including popular songs like “Nutcracker,” “El Cascabel,” and “Ave Maria.” Now’s your chance to celebrate a Merry-Achi Christmas!

Opportunities to Share

Volunteer with The Salvation Army: Whether you like to get out and interact with the community or work behind the scenes, The Salvation Army is the perfect place to volunteer. Whether it’s dressing up like Santa Claus to collect donations or picking out personal gifts for kids or a family in need, there’s an opportunity for everyone to enjoy.

Merry & Bright Pop Up & Toy Drive: Help out underprivileged children by donating toys at the Merry & Bright Pop Up and Toy Drive on November 18. Simply bring a new, unwrapped toy to give to the toy drive. These donations will go directly to children in need, making their holiday season a little brighter. While you’re there, you can enjoy a wide range of vendors, live music, delicious food and drinks, henna, micro tattoos, and permanent jewelry.

Not only is the train ride free, but it also takes families on an adventure through thousands of holiday lights and festive scenes throughout the one-mile loop in Irvine Park. There are also plenty of things to do and experience in Santa’s Village, where entry is free but attractions are ticketed. The park is open 4–9 p.m. on weekdays and 10 a.m.–9 p.m. on weekends from November 24 to December 23.

Safe Celebration

While the holidays are hopefully a time of joy for you and your family, there are also extra hazards that come into play. We urge safety in both the use of lighted candles and live Christmas trees this year. Up to 7,400 fires are started each year because of household candles, so please take extra care. Consider using battery-powered candles or scented spray instead to address all your aroma needs while avoiding any inherent dangers. And if you do decide to use candles, please don’t leave them unattended.

Live Christmas trees, naturally, can create another fire hazard. If you’ve brought a real tree into your apartment for the holidays, take every precaution to keep it watered so it doesn’t dry out. Also, take care to keep all open flames away from the branches, and make sure you turn all lights off when you’re not at home. Stay safe and enjoy the holidays!

With activities, performances, shopping opportunities, and more, Riverside, CA, is the place to be this time of year. From all of us at The 3900 Apartments, we wish you a very merry and happy holiday season!
